puppy training: START THEM RIGHT!!!!

It’s so much easier to BUILD behaviors than to UNDO behaviors. I love having the fresh slate youngsters. They are a blast and soak up learning like a sponge. You’ll be amazed at what they can master at age appropriate levels.

For the young pups, I still expect them to master all the core basics. It’s just that the curriculum may be slowed down and broken apart into smaller pieces of less complexity. And, we want to keep the focus on fun and motivation to build a desire to learn and please. THESE ARE BABIES, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t learn how to behave and behave well. The earlier we start, the BETTER.

Key differences in how I work with the babies depending on age:

How long I work with them at a time, shorter sessions, more repetitions for the youngsters;

  • The level of precision expected may not be quite as tight, for e.g. loose leash walking for a 4 month old, vs. more precision heeling for an 8 month old;
  • Durations are shorter, for e.g. a 2 minute sit or down for a 4 month old, vs. a 10 minute sit or down for an 8 month old;
  • We may plateau at certain levels and repeat more for younger pups than older dogs;
  • Complexity of distractions in public may be brought on slower.

YOUR PUPPY HAS KEY DEVELOPMENTAL PERIODS JUST LIKE A CHILD. Let a pro take advantage of using those key time periods to best advantage. There is a profound difference to the maturity of a pup who has been socialized and trained well and correctly at a young age to one who has not. Your pup grows from success to success.

AH, THE TEEN STAGE...Adolescent dogs are often at the stage where their exuberant nature exceeds their mental focus with various dire consequences. Depending on how much puppy foundation they had or their size, it can suddenly seem as if what was one cute puppy has become it’s very own pack of dogs in one body. The amount of damage that one adolescent can cause in a short period of time is truly astounding. Most of the time this is without any evil intent on their part, but nonetheless, the results are the same. Jumping, digging, chewing, added to age, persistence, increased mental focus, size and strength can result in a household where your beloved puppy is just no fun any more. You love him and want to kill him in equal measure..... Teen Camp is the perfect solution.

Or, you may have done a fair amount of puppy foundation but now want to kick it up a notch and have a dog you can really take places, or travel with, and maintain the higher, more precision level of obedience needed for those tasks, including being able to work and play with your dog offleash. Again Teen Camp is designed to really build adult focus, responsiveness, and reliability to command under a wide variety of circumstances. Focus on work under distraction is key, and once they have mastered the basics, teens spend a lot of time working out in public, on crowded sidewalks, in all sorts of different buildings: hardware stores, feed stores, the vet’s office, hotels, and off leash here at the ranch and depending on progress up on the trails.

HAVE THE DOG EVERYONE OOHS AND AHS OVER. TEEN CAMP IS FOR YOU!

  • Distraction training in public
  • Management plan to meet your individual needs

All of the training programs at ADDR also include a day and a half owner training at the end of the program AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE  and a lifetime guarantee of availability to answer questions and troubleshoot scenarios to insure that what your dog  has learned goes home with you and doesn't just stay here at the ranch!  I want everything your dog has mastered here at the ranch to transfer to your home setting.  We are known nationwide for our pioneering owner transfer training, and thoroughly enjoy our time building that connection between you and your dog.

The older dog: UNRAVELING THE PUZZLE.  Building a balanced, happy, confident, older dog can be more challenging depending on what kind of foundation work has been done with the dog through their puppy stages, but it is nearly ALWAYS possible to make huge improvements on the level of behavior, focus, and responsiveness to command.   How far any particular older dog can or will come depends in part on their genetics, conformation and foundation work, and individual personality.

Typically, adult dogs come in between the ages of 18 months and 5 years of age.  The oldest dog I've ever trained was an 11 year old Labrador who needed a higher level of obedience skills to travel and go to his owner's summer home.  And he did terrific.  I've retrained any number of dogs 6, 7, and 8 years of age, but once we get up into those regions we do need to be taking a look at the effects of issues of aging, arthritis, or disease processes on the appropriateness of out of home boarding training.  All older dogs are screened to see if the ADDR Board and Train Program is a good fit.

IT'S NEVER TOO LATE FOR GOOD PRO TRAINING!!!

For the younger adult dog, typical scenarios that bring a dog into training, include a young adult who's had a fair smattering of puppy training and now needs to be fully finished as an adult; a dog whose owners want to be able to do more things with their dog, take them places or travel with them;  a dog who has some problems or persistent behaviors, and whose owners have sought training elsewhere with less than useful results; a dog who is exhibiting changes in behavior which are causing changes or chaos in the household; or a dog whose owners now have the resources they always wished to have when the dog was a pup.  There are as many reasons why older dogs come into training as there are dogs and owners.  The important thing to realize is that depending on where your dog is at,  you may need to make some changes in your household routines, and do some consistent follow up to reshape your dog's behavior.

Again, the expectations of what your dog can master of the core goals does not change -  but we may have to UNDO some behaviors or habits, before layering on new, constructive behaviors.  It is always harder to UNDO behavior than to layer on fresh.  It's just an extra step, that's all.  Over and over and over again though it has been my experience that the Adult Camp frees dogs up to be all that they can be for themselves and with their families.  It is always a joy to see a dog reach their full potential.
